Here is my lecture on why Islam prescribes the ‘hijab’ for Muslim women. In this lecture, I discussed how society perceives women in the West, and how this has impacted women’s perception of themselves. I also discussed how the solutions that Islam posits by way of ‘hijab’, and other facets of its social system, are capable of improving women’s condition today.
I really enjoyed the Q&A that followed this lecture – watch out for the interesting and open discussion on the role of men in establishing and maintaining respect for the ‘hijab’ in society, the question on ‘spiritual’ leadership and the clergy, and more.
This lecture was delivered at the University of Kent (Canterbury), during Islam Awareness Week, February 2013.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatu Allāhi wa-barakātuh.
Is the man allowed to force his household women to wear hijab? If not, so if they want to go out almost naked, will he have nothing to do about it?
Excellent lecture, wa-jazāki Allāhu khayran! =)
